[dropcap style=”dropcap3″]D[/dropcap] r. Okumu has long been involved in volunteer medical outreach programs. He volunteered as a medical student and was the director of a free clinic started by medical students at UC Davis School of Medicine. He organized and ran a program that shipped donated HIV medications to Uganda, during the peak of the epidemic in that country. He recently returned to Kampala, Uganda, registered with the Uganda Medical Association, and volunteered at the Makerere University School of Health Sciences and Mulago Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, working with faculty and residents and performing orthopaedic and spinal surgery. Dr. Okumu has secured commitments from manufacturers of medical devices and supplies, to donate equipment and supplies, when he returns to Uganda every year with a team to perform life-changing surgeries.
